ow. got my wisdom tooth out today. actually not ow, as half my face is still numb, but i have an icepack on to reduce the swelling. I have a very definite McKay slant to my mouth currently :)

I only have upper wisdom teeth, one isn't out but the other has been cutting my cheek and hurting for the last couple of weeks so finally went to the dentist on monday, and the first availability for wisdom consultation was today. I was offered laughing gas but after checking, my health fund didn't cover it so i decided to man up :)

anyone got any wisdom tooth removal aftercare tips? the pamphlet they gave me wasn't great - the interwebs have told me not to eat till the numbness wears off, don't drink with a straw within the first 24 hours, soft foods etc etc, can anyone add anything?

i think i will read some more of lord of scoundrels, ah comfort reading!

You shouldn't eat or drink anything too hot for the next 24 hours. What do you have by way of painkillers?

Really? All the american post-extraction sites are all YOU WILL SUCK OUT YOUR BLOOD CLOT AND HAVE A DRY SOCKET WHICH WILL HURT BITCHES!

..okay, maybe they didn't say bitches, but it was implied!

quite possibly so!

THEY ARE CRAZY PARANOID PEOPLE, I have given many a post-wisdom-tooth-extraction patient drinks through a straw with nary a sucked-out clot, and none of our surgeons prohibit straws. But avoid them anyway, if you're worried - you'll probably find it easier strawless, actually, especially while you're still numb. *g*

It sounds like it was a fairly minor job, I would say you should be fine! Bring along your gauze, I can apply compression if need be - yes, I have tickets too. *g*

The flanstaches are making me weep with joy/horror.

awesome, will avoid teh hotness of food and drink - I was going to try some soup if i get an appetite and force myself to have some juice otherwise.

I have nurafen and nurafen plus and some paracetamol - i know aspirin is a no-no due to my blood clot.

It sounds like you're well-stocked with drugs, then. Did they give you a script for anything?

Nope! No stitches or anything either - apparently it was a case of shoving or cutting my gum aside and then crunch crunch tooth out! I kept my eyes VERY closed during the crunching parts!

looking at this is making me feel better though. haha!

My sister rinsed with salt water to keep it clean after about 24 hours (before can dislodge clots). No rinses with alcohol, they dry the stitches/hole out.

Pudding and applesauce are your friend. Mashed potatoes. Milkshakes/smoothies -- though avoid fruit with seeds, like berries. They can get into the wound site.

Sib had some post-procedural bleeding. Biting down gently on wadded gauze helped with that -- pressure.

Awesome, thanks! I hadn't thought of the seed issues - most of my fave smoothies are seed-alicious. I am totally making mash potatoes tomorrow!

They gave me some extra gauze just in case, but I am willing my tooth-hole(tooth gap?) to clot clot clot!

The only things I really remember from when I had mine out was eating snack packs which is pretty much just chocolate custard, soup and for breakfast - hot vita brits. I'd pour boiling water over them and then tip the water off and add sugar. Yes it looks like a disgusting mushy mess, but it tastes good and it's soft.

ETA with the soup let it cool a bit first.

oooh, I like the vita brits idea! mmm, mush! I've always been a fan of very soggy weetbix, but never thought of using hot water on 'em.
