In the Star Trek: The Next Generation novel "Section 31: Rogue," which takes place aboard the Enterprise-E, Lieutenant Sean Hawk is given the distinction of being the first openly gay character in the Star Trek universe (acknowledging that only the television series and movies, not the novelizations, are considered canon).
