book buying binge
May. 19th, 2005 07:48 pmTonight I took advantage of late night shopping and went bookshop hopping. In purchase order:
Abbeys: "The Game" by Laurie R. King
Mary Russell/Holmes yay!! Paperback even more yay!
Borders: "Moby Dick" by Herman Melville and "Pride and Prejudice" by Jane Austen
Both books I have always meant to read and now I have no excuse. Also, because I bought 2 Penguin classics I scored a cute little cloth bag for free. I will be trying my hardest not to underline the word 'Eskimo' in 'Moby Dick' though.
Kinokuniya: "Battle Royale" by Koushun Takami(english version) and "Bellwether" by Connie Willis
I am on a Connie Willis kick, and went to Kino's to see if they had any of hers before I bought at Galaxy because I have a loyalty card for Kino's and I am cheap. And "Bellwether" was only marked at $11.32 to start with! Excellent book, insanely cheap price!(it was $16 or $17 at Galaxy)
"Battle Royale" I am very much looking forward to reading. I was wandering through the store clutching my insanely cheap Connie Willis when I saw it in a pile glaring up at me. I'm a fan of the movie, and now I can read the original.
Oh, yeah, I also bought a 'Wizard: the comics magazine', despite the fact that I, uh, don't really buy comics that much any more. It was cheap, and apparently has a Bruce Campbell article(or at least the cover proclaims: "Bruce Campbell's Screaming Brain", so I'm hopeful), and I love reading about comics gossip and gossip about movies based on comics.
Galaxy: "Lincoln Dreams" and "Fire Watch" by Connie Willis and "Aphrodite's Secret" by Julie Kenner.
Did I mention the Connie Willis kick? I'm in the middle of reading "Passage" at the moment(not my copy, I refuse to purchase until I get to the end) and it's just reminding me how much I love her style, and I've been meaning to buy "Fire Watch"(a short story collection) for ages anyway. So I paid the nosebleed Galaxy prices, and was glad. Kinda. The "Aphrodite's Secret" was an impulse buy, which I may possibly end up regretting. In addition to harder to find sci-fi and fantasy, Galaxy also does a fair trade in 'Supernatural' romances. Which I read, I admit, but in recent years make me cringe more and more. This one, however, seemed a bit more interesting than the usual werewolf/vampire/timetravel/alien scenario. It seems(unless the back cover is lying, which has happened before) to be about a Superhero with Aquaman-type powers whose relationship with the love of his life is on the rocks(boom-tish). One of the reviews says that the comic timing is 'almost Jennifer Crusie-esque', and I like her stuff, and it looks amusing, so I took a chance
books of note, seen, but not purchased:
the new Diane Duane 'So you want to be a wizard' book
New Harry Dresden(and alasen, you wont like this, it's hardcover)
Second green rider book in paperback(which I think I already knew, but I decided to focus on books I wanted that I hadn't read.
Book 2 of Vatta's War by Elizabeth Moon in paperback(Have you got this yet Al? If so, please lend, along with the first book so I can reread it)
and best of all, the New Mallory book "Winter House" was in trade, looking at me, daring me to buy it. But I was strong. So Alasen, please work that library voodoo that you do so well and tell me a library somewhere in Sydney has it.

Date: 2005-05-19 01:48 pm (UTC)They only had one copy, otherwise I would have. I am not a monster. Really.
Yeah, me too. I think I've only read, like, the first 4.
Yeah, I though you'd say that
BORROW TWO COPIES SO WE CAN BOTH READ IT ASAP!
I also have no book icons. Need to fix that.
